As the ferry approached Tarbert on the Isle of Harris, there were approximately 50 to 70 Porpoises! That was the promising beginning of a truly amazing trip of a life-time:
Bee amazed to see Whales and Dolphins from our very own campervan! We had a prime spot at Truimpan Head on the Isle of Lewis, which is recognised, as one of the best sites for whale and dolphin watching in the whole of Europe because of its vast range of Cetacean sightings:
It excelled all our expectations as there were:
- 2 Orcas very close to our campervan at 9pm!
- Fin, Humpback and plenty of Minke plus a pod of Common Dolphins in the evening.
- 4 Risso Dolphins close to the shore the next day.
The dedicated volunteers at the Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) Shore-watch carry out surveys to monitor whale and dolphin sightings every day and they didn’t mind me joining them. They record sightings of Minke Whale, Killer Whale (Orca), Risso Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphin, White-Beaked Dolphin, Atlantic White-Sided Dolphin, Short-Beaked Common Dolphin, Harbour Porpoise, Humpback Whales and Fin Whales.
